During the blueberry harvest beginning mid August, drop by and sample our freshly made blueberry muffins and blueberry tea.
The following muffin recipe was provided by a local blueberry producer and has been a hit with guests.
Sophie’s best of the Blues Muffins.
½ cup rolled oats
½ cup orange juice
1¼ cup flour
½ cup sugar
1¼ tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
¼ tsp. baking soda
1 egg
½ cup oil
1 ½ cup wild blueberries
Soak rolled oats and orange juice together for about 10 minutes.
Beat 1 egg – add ½ cup oil. Add this to wet mixture (oats and orange Juice).
Stir together flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and baking soda. Add blueberries. If berries are frozen, put them in a sieve and just before adding to mixture, pour boiling water over them and shake off water and add berries to dough. That way they don’t turn your mixture blue. Put dough in muffin tins. Makes 12.
Put topping on the muffins in the pan before baking.
Topping – 1/3 cup flour, 3 Tbsp. brown sugar, 1/8 cup butter, ¼ tsp. cinnamon, pinch of salt. Mix into crumbs and use on top of muffins before baking.
Bake at 375 degrees for 18 minutes .
We carry functional blueberry pottery designed by Louise Pentz of Pleasantville, Nova Scotia and the pottery of Susan Weaver of Quebec.
There is a wide selection of wild blueberry food items – jams, jellies, juices, teas, coffee, syrups, candy – check out the food product menu. We can assemble a “blue-tiful” blueberry basket for gift giving. Give us a price range of the gift and the product you would like to have in the basket and we will put it together for you. Nothing mass produced – something very special. Each basket is unique!
We also carry blueberry fabric and some of it isn’t even blue! That’s for those who love blueberries but don’t have anything blue in their house. It is all 100% cotton. Check out the fabric menu. Blueberry fabric is difficult to find and we go to great lengths (no pun intended) to have a good variety of blueberry prints available.
The shop also carries some items that are not blueberry oriented just because we love the artisans’work and each makes a terrific gift. We carry the Maritime Amos Pewter, wood working by Darrell Feltmate a local craftsperson, and Daydream art, a unique line of jewelry by Pauline Kinney, We have also added maple syrup to our inventory and beeswax candles as bees are useful in the production of blueberries. Most of our items are crafted in the Maritimes.
